Lawyer Moushumi Khan spoke about defending the rights of immigrants. Librarian Pamela Lieber told us about how the simple act of checking out a book was going to radically change. Rev. Patricia Ackerman of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, who had just put together a U.S tour of two Iraqi women, described her experiences in Iraq.
- “The Human Side of War” (October 2003), featured a great line-up of speakers including Rev. John A. Buehrens, former President of the Unitarian Universalist Association, Canadian military journalist and author, Scott Taylor, and Lee Gough, the sister of 2003 US Navy Conscientious Objector. A solo performance by Najib Shaheen demonstrated the oud (an Arabic string instrument) and gave a nice cultural touch. Middle Eastern food was enjoyed by all.
- “ISite” a play written and performed by Kathryn Leila Buck (January 2004). “Where is home?” This question began the theatrical Journey of Katie Buck, daughter of a Lebanese mother and American diplomat father, who grew up in constant motion between cultures and worlds. “Sometimes I feel like the ocean: It’s touching so many shores at once that forms the shape of who I am.” Weaving comic impressions with moving reflections, Katie led her audience on a deeply personal yet ultimately universal journey through identity, belonging, and what we call home.
- “Intelligence and War: Lessons from Recent History” (April 2004), Raymond L. McGovern, CIA Analyst for 27 years, Founder of Intelligence Professionals for Sanity, gave a rousing speech about the events leading up to the Iraq War. This event drew comments such as “Thank you, thank you. This country is in trouble. Thanks for providing a forum for this important speaker.” Another said: “ It helped me understand the situation which I knew in the back of my mind, but I needed it confirmed.”
