What is the Peace Task Force about?
The Peace Task Force, a voice for justice, diplomacy and human dignity came together in late 2001, to educate, advocate, mobilize and take action on issues of concern ranging from domestic to international issues.
-
Why is it called the Peace Task Force?
Because we are interested in discussing and promoting peaceful solutions in a turbulent world.
-
Do you have to be a pacifist to be a member of the group?
No, we have varying opinions on this matter. Some of us believe that force is necessary, but only as a last resort. Others are pacifists. The key is that we respect each other’s opinions.
-
Do you have a specific platform that you advocate?
Our purpose is to educate ourselves, and others, on the major issues facing our world today. While we promote peace, we may have varying views on how this can be achieved. In our monthly meetings, we try to provide a safe place for discussion.
-
What do you do?
We have monthly meetings that provide education and a safe place for discussion. We organize public educational events on domestic and international issues that are of concern to the group and suggest and organize actions to be taken by participants.
-
How do you take action if you are not all in agreement on everything?
Leaders of the group and leaders of events suggest actions. Participants in a discussion may have ideas. You have freedom to choose whether to comply on a particular issue.
-
What kinds of actions do you take?
We encourage letterwriting to government officials and the press. Web sites have facilitated this approach. We participate in rallies and demonstrations that are organized by larger organizations such as United for Peace and Justice. We partner with other congregations and organizations on coordinating educational events, lobbying and other activities.
-
Will there be a need for a Peace Task Force should there be a change of administrations?
Most definitely, yes. There will always be issues that need people action. We must keep ourselves educated and current and take timely actions that are appropriate.
-
How will I benefit if I get involved?
You will learn about different ways of thinking about issues. You will receive information that is not readily available in the press. You will have an opportunity to contribute your skills. You will have the social benefit of working with a group that has concerns similar to yours.
